For years, students told me the only thing standing between them and lessons was geography. So I brought the studio to them. Today I teach live online guitar lessons over Zoom to students in Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and New York, along with Minnesota students in places like New Ulm, Mankato, and Albert Lea who’d rather trade a long drive for more practice time. I’m Phil, an award winning guitar teacher with 25 years of teaching experience and the author of the Awesome Guitar Series, an instructional method now sold in twelve countries and available on Amazon.
Here’s what I’ve learned after teaching students from the East Coast to greater Minnesota: the screen doesn’t water anything down. My Zoom lessons carry the same depth as my in-person lessons, because the heart of my teaching isn’t watching your fingers from two feet away. It’s showing you how the entire fretboard connects, in whatever style you love: acoustic, classical, jazz, blues, rock, or metal. I share materials on screen, send you what you need between lessons, and structure everything so you always know exactly what to work on next.
My online students cover the full range. Beginners in New Jersey building their first chords. Intermediate players in Massachusetts breaking through plateaus that had lasted years. Advanced players in New York and Connecticut who were sure they’d learned it all, until we started digging into details no one had ever shown them. I’ll tell you what I tell every student: I don’t know everything about the guitar. But what I do know, and how I teach it, has opened a new way of thinking for every player I’ve worked with.

Blues and Funk are where the guitar becomes a voice. You'll learn how to make the strings feel, not just sound — building the vocabulary of bends, slides, rhythmic groove, and call-and-response phrasing that defines these styles. Whether you want to find your inner Hendrix or lock into a tight funk pocket, this is where feel meets fundamentals.
Classical & Acoustic Fingerpicking
Fingerstyle playing opens up a whole new dimension of the guitar — melody, bass line, and rhythm happening all at once under one set of hands. We'll work through classical technique and acoustic fingerpicking patterns that develop your independence, your touch, and your ear in ways no pick can. Disciplined, rewarding, and deeply musical.
Jazz & Fusion
Jazz is the graduate school of guitar — and it's more accessible than most players think. You'll work through chord voicings, jazz harmony, reading charts, and the harmonic vocabulary that makes this genre so rich. Fusion students go further, blending jazz theory with rock and contemporary styles. Phil's background in formal jazz study makes this a genuine deep dive, not a surface-level introduction.
Rock & Roll and Heavy Metal
Rock is where most players start — and where Phil's neck repetition system pays off immediately. You'll learn the riffs and power chord foundations, then quickly move into lead playing, pentatonic and modal soloing, and the technique that separates players who can shred from players who understand what they're playing. Beginners through advanced welcome.
